Assignment 3
Illustration Problem

Instructions:
To create an illustration(s) based on a photograph(s). The design will be 15 inches square. The design should be thematic in nature. For example you could design an illustration that has soccer for a theme. Or perhaps rock and roll could be your theme. A good starting point would be to find source material that you can use for generating your different icons/ilustrations. I will discuss this further in class. This source material can be photographs or other source material. Note: do not render illustrations of existing illustrations. Several icons may be used in lieu of one large illustration. One method to consider is to scan the source material and recreate line illustrations using your scanned source material as templates. This procedure is quite frequently used in illustrations. You may consider several "detailed" illustrations and several less sophisticated illustrations. One possibility is to generate one very complex/sophisticated illustration which is what more and more students have been doing recently. This is an opportunity to use everything you have learned regarding Adobe Illustrator and to incorporate it into an illustration or a group of illustrations.
Objectives:
To truly familiarize yourself with the bezier curves and drawing with the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. This is the most significant aspect. To understand that illustration(s) can be evolutionary and derivative. To learn how to generate an illustration derived from a photograph, or another source. To better understand the process of illustration. In particular how photographic source material and graphic imagery inform and inspire illustration.
Guidelines:
Create an Illustration that is 15" square. Final assignment will be critiqued electronically. If your solution is in color it should submitted be in color.
Suggestions/Comments:
• If you see a photo or piece of art you like, you can recontextualize this and make your own illustration.
• Look at DaFont, Web Dings and Wing Dings for inspiration. These fonts (and their characters) are all pieces of line art that could be incorporated. Refer to these for their simplicity and graphic quality.
Approach To Consider
• Bold
• Simple
• Communication at a glance
